This is an ancient oracular technique where you open a book at random and read a paragraph, word, sentence, poem, chapter at random and see what means to you.
Like other oracles you can have a definite question in mind or no question in mind and let the oracle give you the reply to the question you may have asked.
Often important books like the bible are used as such oracles or in Iran we use Hafiz poetry. My Persian is not good enough to do that, if any Persian speaking reader can do that please leave a comment or write some articles about the use of Hafiz as an oracle.
For today, I’m using another method where I select the book (an appropriate spiritual book) at random as well as the spot at random.
Here goes the experiment:
The book is called “Karma Meditation and Higher Spiritual Evolution,” by Bach Long – the section I opened starts with:
“First, we pray for knowledge, enlightenment, harmony, perfection and to have compassionate love for all.”
Fair enough that seems perfect for me today – especially as I’m doing A Course in Miracles workbook day by day for three hundred and sixty five days. Today is a review day where I concentrate on my holiness (wholeness) – so it’s a perfect day to pray for knowledge, enlightenment, harmony, perfection and to have compassionate love for all.
As it happened this random book opening oracle did not need much interpretation. I’ll just spend some time meditating and praying as suggested…

I remember in the original site having written about this hexagram of the I Ching.
The I Ching has sixty four hexagrams (six line chapters). Each hexagram has six lines which could remain fixed or change leading to any of the other hexagrams. This allows the I Ching to give us clues about any situation.
Now for Hexagram three – difficulty in the beginning: At the beginning of any enterprise there is inertia and you don’t know what you are doing so more potentials for difficulties.
The I Ching says about this:
Difficulty at the beginning has works supreme success,
Furthering through perseverance.
Nothing should be undertaken.
It furthers one to appoint helpers.
Basically we are talking about a situation when a new project has begun or we are entering a new phase of a project. The nothing should be undertaken, signifies nothing large and means learn to walk before you try to run.
Another translation says:
Difficulty followed by sublime success! Persistence in a righteous course brings reward, but do not seek some (new) goal (or destination): it is highly advantageous to consolidate the present possibilities.
Note: Typically I use the Richard Wilhelm translation of the The I Ching or Book of Changes
but I have about twenty different translations to help me understand the meaning of the hexagram and of course more than forty years of experience with the I Ching has meant that I have specific association with the hexagrams and the moving lines based on readings for myself and clients.
I also recommend Understanding the I Ching
by Richard Wilhelm.

My first mystical experience from the end of last post:
I was looking out of the window…. Suddenly time stopped. Everything looked absolutely normal but ever more so. I disappeared. There was an experience. It was most wondrous. It was literally awesome (full of awe).
Even now it is impossible to put into words. As the Tao Te Ching says, “The reality which can be put into words is not the true reality.” At the time the only words which came to my mind was Even though I could only come up with those words, I remained an atheist for many years on. However, my life had changed for ever.
A few weeks after “coming face to face with God,” I was introduced to the I Ching which is the Chinese classic of changes.
I was told that it was an oracle. At the time I did not understand what an oracle was and imagined that this was a form of fortune telling.
I was totally skeptical. I asked some question and got an answer. As a scientist I tested the load of cobblers (BS in American) by asking the same question a second time. I threw the coins for the second time knowing that I was going to prove this was just some superstition.
The fourth hexagram came. I read:
Youthful Folly has success.
It is not I who seek the young fool;
The young fool seeks me.
At the first oracle I inform him.
If he asks two or three times, it is importunity.
If he importunes, I give him no information.
Perseverance furthers.
As I write this I have the same shiver in my back bone as I had that day forty years ago.
From that day the I Ching became my bible and I have been persevering since then in the study of the Wisdom traditions of the whole world.

In order to understand Transpersonal Illumination we have to examine each word individually.
Transpersonal means beyond the Personal that is to say Universal. To explain a little about the Universal I want to write about the funeral of my compatriot Mullana Jallel-E-Din-E-Rumi (better known in the West as just Rumi). When Rumi died in Konia, the Jews and Christians joined the procession. The Muslims became insulted that the people of other faiths should join in their grieving. Sultan Valid the son of Rumi asked the Christians and the Jews, “Why are you demanding to join us?”
The leader of the Jews answered, “When we hear the words of Mullana (our master) we understand Moses better than when we read the Torah.” And the leader of the Christians continued, “We too, when we listed to our master we understood Jesus better than when we read the Gospels.”
Sultan Valid said, “You are some of us.” And not only he allowed the Jews and Christians to be part of the procession he allowed their leaders to be among the pole bearers.
This is an example of the universal.
I first came face to face with the universal in 1967 when I was in an altered state of consciousness. At this time I was an extreme materialist studying chemistry under the leadership of Derek Barton who won the Nobel Prize the next year. I believed that science and technology would solve all of the world’s problems and did not understand any use for poetry, philosophy and definitely mysticism. At this time I was a severe radical evangelical atheist. I would argue all the time and try to convert everyone to the correctness of my position.
After staying up all night writing a chemistry paper, here I was in a waking dream and then I awoke. I was looking out of the window…. Suddenly time stopped. Everything looked absolutely normal but ever more so. I disappeared.
There was just an experience of being. It was most wondrous. It was literally awesome (full of awe). Even now it is impossible to put into words. At the time I called it coming face to face with God (it did not bother me that I was an atheist and remained so for many years on). I could not deny my experience of Illumination. My life had changed for ever.
As the Tao Te Ching says, “The reality which can be put into words is not the true reality.”
For now: Transpersonal Illumination is a combination of different divination methods like I Ching and Tarot from a Jungian perspective.

It has taken along time to restore this web site. It went down and all the previous posts were lost thanks to my own mistake. Thanks to my not being true to myself. I’ll write about that later. For now, suffice it that I’m restarting this site about my way of doing the I Ching, Tarot and other divination and oracular methods – based on Transformative Imagination and Jungian psychology.
As I’m writing this post, I decided to do a single Tarot card reading about this site and what is going on at this time.
I drew:
Nine of wands – damaged but recovering
The nine of wands has a medieval soldier (unless I mention otherwise I use the designs of Pamela Colman Smith in the Rider Tarot Deck) who’s head is bandaged but appears safe. He’s holding a wand and is above eight other wands.
There are three four points here:
- The person – this website – has been damaged.
- He has survive – I have restored the site even though I have lost the old posts.
- Wands represent creativity and intuition – which are the sources of Transpersonal Illumination.
- Wands are powerful and mean that the damage done may be healed.
